BIO

Gilbert is an accomplished researcher with over a decade of research experience on projects working with minority communities, government agencies, community/arts organisations. He has over two decades of experience working with, and serving in, community and arts organisations focusing on multicultural and queer communities. He also serves as a public educator and is available for advanced workplace training in diversity and inclusion.

Gilbert has over a decade of research experience. He has been a named researcher on several successful research grants, held multiple research
fellowships and has mentored or consulted on successful grant applications for research and arts funding. He has worked on projects with government agencies, community organisations and arts organisations and is looking to work more closely with the corporate sector.

He also has over two decades of experience working in and with community and arts organisations focusing on multicultural and queer communities. He has served on the boards, committees and reference groups of several organisations including: AIDS Council of NSW, ALSO Foundation, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Nexus Multicultural Arts Foundation, and Diversity Arts Australia. He has served as an academic consultant for several other organisations on particular projects, including All Together Now and The Dulwich Centre.

Gilbert graduated with a PhD in Gender and Cultural Studies from the University of Sydney in 2009. He was previously an Associate Lecturer in Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney in 2008. Between 2009 and 2012, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Postcolonial and Globalization Studies at the Hawke Research Institute, University of South Australia, and the International Centre for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding, University of South Australia. In 2012 he was awarded the Discovery Early Career Research Award from the Australian Research Council and subsequently was awarded the ResearchSA Fellowship by the University of South Australia from 2012-2015. During 2012 he was a Visiting Scholar in the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2016 he moved to Melbourne to become a Lecturer in Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne, before joining Deakin as the Lecturer in Gender and Sexuality Studies in 2020.
