RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests span across the clinical and academic space.
My clinical expertise is informed by evidence-based practice combined with leading a high performing short stay arthroplasty program at Victorias largest regional hospital. A part of this job involves collecting and reporting on data to inform a quality improvement cycle that ensures we delivery excellent care to patients having joint replacement surgery. This involves upskilling and supervising post-graduate MD students with auditing and data collection. The research interest in short stay arthroplasty space looks at a pre vs post implementation cohort analysis at the single site I work. While completing scholarly, quality improvement work, I am a research supervisor for this project lead by an Orthopaedic Registrar supported by the Orthopaedic Department and Orthopaedic Research Team. While in it's infancy, we are looking to gauge the effective of a structured, standardised care pathway based on Enhanced Recovery After Surgery principles, and its impact on complications, length of hospital stay, emergency department representations and hospital readmissions after discharge, (Patient Reported Outcome Measures) and Patient Reported Experience Measures.
In the academic space my research aims to look at low cost, easy to implement strategies such as breath work, to reduce stress and anxiety in the assessed clinical simulation space. This will be initially conducted across the third year MD spacy, with summative outcomes being measured during a mock objective structured clinical exam to gauge the feasibility of such an intervention. If successful, the project finding will be disseminated throughout the school of medicine and wider faculty of health. There is also scope for a longitudinal study, I wish to explore the impact of this intervention for registered medical staff during their practice post MD, specifically in the deteriorating patient, emergency, surgery and critical care areas of medicine.
