TEACHING EXPERTISE
I've always had in interest in upskilling to support departments I have worked within. Prior to specialist nursing work I was employed on surgical and general medical wards where I took on portfolios such as undergraduate student facilitator, graduate nurse support, clinical skills assessor, basic life support trainer and manual handling trainer.
I have completed a Graduate Diploma of Nursing Majoring in Education. On this journey I took it upon myself to use university work to work on quality improvement projects and ad hoc presentations while I was employed as an Anaesthetic / Post Anaesthetic Recovery Room Nurse. This work offered insight into what it takes to deliver effective education in line with department needs for improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.
My Anaesthetic Nursing role, vast nursing experience throughout the hospital, graduate diploma and passion for education led me applying for a Clinical Practice Educator (formerly Clinical Skills Educator) role at Deakin University Medical School Geelong-Barwon. Where I currently I work with third and fourth year medical students on clinical placement and manage the year three surgery portfolio. Apart of this role was completing of Deakins Graduate Certificate of Higher Education (Teaching and Learning). This role helps develop my understanding of scholarly teaching and its role in improvement of curriculum and its effective delivery. With this understanding, drive and recently stepping into the assessment space within the university, I have developed a keen interest in researching and delivering adjuncts to standard curriculum to help make learning environments more conducive and teaching more impactful in the short and long term.
Since employed at Deakin I have also been hired into a Clinical Nurse Consulting role for the Department of Anaesthesia, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Barwon Health as an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Program Coordinator. This specialist role involves using clinical expertise to inform and educate hospital staff regulary, not only at Barwon Health where I work, but at a state national level. I'm often meeting with staff from external hopsitals to consult on short stay joint replacement surgery. In August 2026 I will be speaking at the Victorian Perioperative Nursing Groups annual regional conference at Ballarat.
