BIO

Bernie joined Deakin University in 1992 as a public health academic, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and leading a number of curriculum review and innovation initiatives. He held a number senior roles in the School and the Faculty, including leading the University's Master of Public Health program for a number of years and chairing the Faculty's Academic Progress and Discipline Committee for about 15 years. He was also a member of Academic Board for a number of years, and the University's Legislation Committee for 14 years, reporting to the University Council.

He was the Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) for the Faculty of Health from 2008 to 2016, where he was responsible for leading curriculum and academic development and review in the faculty, at both strategic and operational levels. He had a particular focus on building teaching and learning leadership capacity at school, faculty and university levels and creating a culture that values and rewards high-quality teaching and effective learning and assessment. He built a strong base of the scholarship of teaching and learning through support for staff to use their teaching innovations as the basis for publications. He was a member Academic Board for a number of years and had extensive involvement in university policy review and development, and in academic governance, quality and standards.

From July 2016, he was Deakin’s first Dean of Students where he had responsibility to ensure a clear and accessible point of contact for all Deakin students on any matter relating to the overall student experience. His portfolio incorporated the Student Complaints Office, the Student Appeals Office and the Student Conduct Office. He was actively involved in a broad range of student advocacy work, including student mental and physical wellbeing and respectful relationships. The Dean also works closely with Executive Deans, Associate Deans, Heads of Schools and Departments, Course Directors, Student Advisors, Unit Chairs and Student Academic Progress, Academic Integrity and Student General Misconduct committees across the university to ensure that individual student issues are resolved appropriately in a timely manner. But the real focus of the role is to identify systemic issues that cause difficulties for students and to work in partnership with other senior leaders across the university to lead appropriate changes in university operations and policy.

He retired in 2021, and is now an Emeritus Professor in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic. He also works as a consultant with a number of higher education providers and coordinates the Australasian Academic Integrity Network.
