TEACHING EXPERTISE

I teach Applied Counselling Skills (HPY210, HPS433/HPY710) with a strong focus on creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment. My teaching is grounded in a gender‑ and sexuality‑affirming framework, informed by my work as a clinical psychologist and my experience working with diverse communities. I prioritise supporting students from LGBTQIA+ communities, neurodivergent students, individuals with communication differences, and First Nations students.

In my classes, I deliberately cultivate psychological safety by setting clear expectations, modelling empathy, and encouraging respectful and reflective dialogue. I design experiential learning activities that allow students to practise counselling skills in ways that are flexible and responsive to different communication styles, identities, and cultural contexts.

I draw heavily on my clinical expertise to guide students in applying evidence‑based, ethical, and affirming practices. I also encourage critical self‑reflection around identity, power, and inclusivity in therapeutic work. Through this approach, I aim to develop students’ practical counselling skills while equipping them to work sensitively and effectively with diverse clients in contemporary professional settings.
