RESEARCH INTERESTS
My PhD is in Nutritional Epidemiology, with a focus on 'Planetary Health Diets' within the wider field of healthy, sustainable and just food systems. Currently, I am working with dietary algorithms that predict the bioavailability of minerals that are of public health concern – including iron and zinc – utilising data from the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey, and the AUSNUT database. Previously, my research explored sociodemographic factors that are associated with adherence to a planetary health diet. Across this work, I have developed a strong interest in its intersection with the Australian food system, food policy, regulation and politics.
My role as a casual research fellow has extended my professional work beyond my PhD into the field of ultra-processed foods. Here I have created a database of ultra processed foods and applied the NOVA classification system using the AUSNUT database. Taken together, these two topics represent some of the most pressing modern public health nutrition challenges.
