About Prof Tissa Wijeratne OAM MD PhD FRACP 

Professor Tissa Wijeratne is a senior neurologist, clinician-scientist, and global brain-health advocate, with a strong commitment to translational neuroscience, equity, and workforce development. He is an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University, contributing to education, research, and policy-relevant initiatives across brain and mind health.

Professor Wijeratne is a consultant neurologist , Director , Neurology and stroke services at Western Health, Melbourne, where he has played a key role in developing comprehensive neurology, stroke, and headache services across multiple hospital campuses. He is also the Co-founder and Co-Chair World Brain day , World Federation of Neurology, paving the way towards brain health as a key policy issue globally, including the WHO definition on brain health , 2021. and holds adjunct or honorary academic appointments with several national and international universities.

Internationally, Professor Wijeratne is recognised for his leadership in brain health, migraine, and stroke neurology. He serves as a Trustee of the World Federation of Neurology and holds senior leadership roles within global neurology and headache organisations across the Asia–Oceania region. His work emphasises systems-based approaches to brain health, integrating neuroscience, public health, education, and policy.

Professor Wijeratne’s research spans clinical trials, neuroinflammation, migraine biology, neuromodulation, stroke prevention, and brain-capital frameworks. He has authored and edited numerous peer-reviewed publications and academic books, and actively mentors medical students, trainees, and early-career researchers.

Beyond academia and clinical medicine, he is deeply engaged in community and philanthropic initiatives, including children’s brain-health education, culturally inclusive outreach programs, and global-south partnerships. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to improving brain health across the lifespan—locally, nationally, and globally
