TEACHING EXPERTISE

Professor Tissa Wijeratne has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education since 1996, teaching across multiple countries and health systems, with a strong and sustained focus on equity, access, and capacity building in disadvantaged communities. His teaching philosophy integrates clinical excellence, mentorship, professionalism, and systems thinking, ensuring that learners are equipped to deliver high-quality, compassionate care in diverse settings.

He has led and delivered over 2,000 Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) supervisor and examiner workshops, and has directly supervised and mentored more than 450 physician trainees to completion, including 65 board-certified neurologists. Many of his former trainees have progressed to senior leadership roles, including Executive Deans and national and global leaders in medicine in Sri Lanka, following formative training periods at Western Health under his mentorship.

Professor Wijeratne has an extensive record of higher degree research supervision, having supported a large number of PhD candidates to completion across clinical neuroscience, public health, and translational medicine. He is currently co-supervising 12 PhD candidates and serves as principal supervisor for three early-career neurologists undertaking doctoral research, reflecting his ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of clinician-scientists and academic leaders.
