BIO
I am a comparative political economist who has attained international recognition for my expertise on Australia’s economic and security relations with South Korea, Korean immigration to Australia, and the two countries’ responses to the rise of China. I am one of few Australian scholars who can work comfortably in the Korean language, who is familiar with Korean society, and who has networks with Korean academia, civil society, government and public officials.
At Deakin I teach into the International Relations programs at the undergraduate and Masters levels, and I am also the Director of the Masters of International Relations. I have also held leadership roles such as the HDR Coordinator for my School and Honours convenor for International Relations. Currently I sit on the Teaching and Learning Committee in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and I am a member of the Human Ethics Advisory Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Education.
My extensive knowledge of Korea makes me one of Australia’s leading comparativist researchers of the broader Asia/Indo–Pacific region and a leader of Asian Studies in Australia. I use this knowledge to supervise and mentor students at all levels, including PhD candidates. I have been the Principal Supervisor for six completed PhDs since 2012, mostly on topics related to the IR and politics of Asia and the Pacific. I also contribute to the field of Asian Studies by my leadership roles in the Asian Studies Association of Australia, for whom I have been a journal editor (2018-24), Vice President (2023-24), and President (2024-).
