BIO

Associate Professor Djin Gie Liem is a sensory and consumer scientist at Deakin University whose work advances how consumer behaviour can be leveraged to enable healthier and more sustainable food choices. His research focuses on the sensory and behavioural drivers of food choice, translating this knowledge into scalable, real-world impact. He has established an international profile, with over 80 peer-reviewed publications, invited keynote contributions, an Executive Editor role at Appetite, and more than $2 million in competitive research funding in the past five years. His perspective is informed by international experience across academia and the food industry in the United States, Europe, and Australia.

He co-leads a multi million dollar project aimed to progress plant based food consumption in Australia. He leads the consumer science stream within the Deakin Centre for Advanced Food Science, providing intellectual and strategic leadership at the interface of research, industry, and application. Through roles in international platforms, including the NZOZ Sensory and Consumer Science Conference and the Asian Sensory Network, he contributes to shaping the direction of the field and strengthening engagement between academia and industry.

His teaching is underpinned by a strong commitment to developing capable, industry-ready graduates. He has held academic leadership roles as Course Director and Deputy Course Director across Bachelor and Master programs in Food and Nutrition, shaping curriculum aligned with industry and research priorities. Through research-integrated and work-integrated learning initiatives, including the CASS We WIL(L) program and international study tours, he has contributed to the training of approximately 1,000 students, with clear impact on career readiness and employment outcomes. His co-curricular programs, including the CASS Academy, extend this approach by supporting high-performing students into advanced study and specialised industry roles.
