BIO

Jane Kotzmann’s research focuses on animal rights, human rights, and the theoretical foundations of legal and governance systems. Her work examines the potential extension of international human rights principles to non-human anmals, and what this reveals about the anthropocentric assumptions embedded within legal frameworks. Across this research, she is interested in how law determines inclusion and exclusion within systems of moral and legal consideration.

She teaches in the areas of animal law, human rights law, international law, and administrative law. Before entering academia, Jane practised as a lawyer in commercial litigation. She is an Associate Professor at Deakin Law School and was previously an Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellow.

She holds degrees in Commerce, Law (with Honours), and a PhD in human rights law from Deakin University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Teach for Australia) from the University of Melbourne.
