How do we develop engineers and researchers who can continue learning, adapting, and leading throughout their careers?

This question underpins my approach to teaching and supervision.

I believe higher education should provide opportunities for an individual to develop capability, agency, confidence, and professional judgement needed to address complex challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.

The most enduring contribution an educator can make is to develop people. Whether teaching undergraduate students or supervising doctoral candidates, I seek to cultivate independent thinkers, reflective practitioners, and future leaders who take ownership of their learning and professional growth.

Learning is most powerful when students are active partners in their own development. My teaching integrates authentic learning, industry engagement, evidence-informed assessment, and timely feedback to help students connect theory with professional practice while progressively developing the confidence and judgement expected of contemporary engineers. I strive to create inclusive learning environments that encourage curiosity, collaboration, critical reflection, and lifelong learning.

My approach to supervision extends beyond successful thesis completion to developing independent researchers capable of making sustained contributions to academia, industry, and professional practice. I work collaboratively with students to foster intellectual curiosity, methodological rigour, scholarly communication, and engagement with national and international research communities. Whether supervising undergraduate capstone projects, master's students, or doctoral candidates, I aim to equip graduates with the capability to lead, innovate, and continue learning throughout their careers.
