Office of DVC Research & Innov/Office of Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation/Deakin Lifespan Institute

BIO

I am Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research Planning and Governance (PVC-RPG) at Deakin University, within the Research and Innovation Portfolio. In this role, I oversee key research functions, including strategy and planning, ethics and integrity, research systems, research infrastructure, research governance, and research performance. Additionally, I am a Professor of Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) in the School of Psychology. I am also a member of the Brain Systems and Neurotherapeutics (BSN) Lab in the Cognitive Neuroscience Unit (CNU) and the Social Neuro and Molecular Sciences theme in SEED Lifespan. As a registered psychologist, I bring a clinical perspective to my academic and research endeavours.

My research focuses on the neurobiological basis of autism spectrum disorder, utilising advanced neuroscience techniques and comprehensive clinical and cognitive assessments. I am particularly interested in how the human brain processes and understands the thoughts and emotions of others, such as empathy, and how these brain systems develop during childhood. I also explore the impact of environmental factors on brain function. I completed my PhD at Monash University in 2006, where I investigated the neuropsychological factors associated with impulsivity and aggression in violent offenders. I have authored over 200 scientific articles on autism and cognitive neuroscience and have received funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Australian Research Council (ARC), and the Brain and Behaviour Research Foundation (US). For more details on my current research activities, please visit the My Research tab.
