RESEARCH INTERESTS

Julie's research is aimed at improving the quality and safety of patient care by optimising clinical decision-making, use of research evidence in practice through implementation science and behaviour change, and models of service delivery. She has a particular interest in patient assessment and management, recognising and responding to deteriorating patients, and effective communication. Julie is also a foundation member of Deakin University's Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research and Institute for Health Transformation.

 

One of Julie's flagship projects is the HIRAID® research program. HIRAID® is a nursing framework encompassing History including Infection risk, Red flags, Assessment, Interventions, Diagnostics, plan / reassess and communication. As a chief investigator, Julie led the Victorian (Eastern Health) arm of the NHMRC funded HIRAID® emergency nursing stepped-wedge cluster randomised controlled trial (2020-2025), and has supported HIRAID® statewide implementation in South Australia (2023-24) and Tasmania (2025), regional implementation in Loddon Mallee (2025) and Hume (2025) Local Health Service Networks. She led the development of the HIRAID® education programs for HIRAID® ED and HIRAID® Aged Care and is a chief investigator on the NHMRC funded HIRAID® Inpatient stepped-wedge cluster randomised controlled trial (2025-2030).  Internationally, Julie is also leading HIRAID® implementation in Chiang Rai, Thailand (2025), Uppsala and Ystad, Sweden (2026), and Cork, Ireland (2026).
