    ARC College of Expert member

    I was selected to the ARC College of Expert (CoE) in 2023 and started my membership from 2024 with a three-year contract initially and renewed for another two years to the end of 2028. My roles include (1) assess, score, and rank funding proposals submitted under the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), identify research excellence. (2) assign external assessors to specific projects, moderate external assessments, and provide final funding recommendations to the ARC. (3) help the ARC recruit new detailed assessors and mentor new members on grant assessment process. (4) provide advice for peer review reforms and provide strategic advice to the ARC on emerging disciplines and cross-disciplinary developments.

    Guest Editors for two special issues of two journals

    I was guest editor for a special issue "Dynamics of Gels and Its Applications" for the journal Gels (Q1). This issue published 11 high quality research articles in the fields. I also served as guest editor for a special issue "Thermal Insulating and Fire-Resistant Polymer Composites" for the journal Polymers (Q1). This issue published 12 high quality articles.

    In the last ten years, I reviewed many grant applications for the ARC (not as a CoE member) from different schemes including Discovery project, Future Fellowship, LIEF and Linkage Projects. I have also been invited to review grant applications by the NSE Research Council of Canada and the Israel Science Foundation (ISF).

    Review of journal manuscripts

    In the past ten years, reviewed more than 70 manuscripts for a wide range of journals including many high impact journals such as Nature Nanotechnology, JACS, Nano Letters, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Small, Biomaterials, ACS Sensors, Angewandte Chemie, Advanced Science, Carbon, Chemical Engineering Journal, Chemistry-a European Journal, Composites Part B, ACS Applied Materials and Interface, and Advanced Materials Interface. Prior to this period, from 2011 to 2015, reviewed 35 manuscripts for many journals such as Chemical Communications, Soft Matter, Journal of Physical Chemistry B, and Journal of Chemistry.

    This news reports the step-freezing method to fabricate a type of silk scaffolds that promote wound healing, developed in my group. The outcome has been published in a high impact journal also (ACS Nano, 2018, 12, 5780−5790).
  • CONFIRMATION OF CANDIDATURE
    HDR coordinator at the Institute for Frontier Materials

    (1) I have been HDR coordinator since 2022. Initially, as viva chair for oral examinations. I together with Assoc. Prof. Maryam chaired the oral examinations for the whole IFM for about one year before other coordinator members joined. After then, I chaired examinations through the whole process from thesis submission to the final oral examination. The total number of examinations I chaired has been more than 60. In addition, I have chaired Confirmation of Candidature (CoC) for18 students and examined the annual reports of many students. I was also chair of a Progress Support Panel for a student with difficulties to meet the Confirmation of Candidature (CoC) requirements. (2) In the non-HDR coordinator role, I have been CoC panel members (internal or external examiners) for about 30 IFM HDR students and external panel members for 3 LES HDR students. (3) I was also an independent chair of an oral examination for a PhD student from the Coventry University (joint student with Faculty of Health and Life Science) as the faculty could not find someone with relevant experience and it was outside of office hours.

    Independent chair of an oral examination for a Coventry-Deakin Cotutelle student

    I served as an independent chair of an oral examination for a PhD student from the Coventry University (joint student with Faculty of Health and Life Science) as the faculty could not find someone with relevant experience. The examination took 2 hours from 17:30-19:30 pm on 21/05/2024.

    I have been invited to examine 11 HDR thesis from Australian universities including Curtin University, RMIT, University of Southern Queensland, and Swinburne University of Technology, as well as two theses from overseas universities (Auckland University and Anna University (India)).
