TEACHING EXPERTISE

COURSE TEACHING (2024-2026)

I am involved in teaching the Masters course “Biomaterials and Bio-nano Interface” at the School of Life and Environmental Science of Deakin University. The contents of my teaching in this course are fundamental knowledges of tissue engineering, the key challenges in this area, overview of tissue engineering materials and the most recent advances, with focus on biomaterials fabricated with silk fibroin, the main protein that constitute silk fibers.

MARKING

SLE765 Masters theses and seminar marking, which included marking and detailed reports on theses,  and marking of oral presentations.

SUMMARY OF SUPERVISION/TEACHING (2016-2026)

As principal supervisor:  Eight PhD completions, 1 thesis submission in July 2026, 6 current PhD students.

As associate/co supervisor: Seven PhD completions (with 2 as principal supervisor practically, though not officially).

Most of my students submitted their theses within 3.5 years. Their research outcomes have been published in high impact journals. My students have been well sought after. They have been associate professor in China, researchers at Adelaide University, University of Sydney, UNSW, University of Melbourne, and in the Europe (Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland), TU Delft (Netherland)).

Supervision across Faculty SEBE: I have supervised two Masters’ projects from LES and SoE, and two final year undergraduate students from SoE (and two current supervision).

I supervised Six ECRs supported by Alfred Deakin Fellowship, my future fellow project, DP project and the DVCR. I served as mentor of ECRs for the Deakin's 2023 DECAF (Deakin Early Career Academic Futures) Research Peer Mentoring Program.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

  • UG, HONOURS OR MASTERS DEGREE SUPERVISION
Supervision of a Masters student's project from School of Life and Environmental Science
    1 Jul 2025 - 31 May 2026
I supervised a Masters student (Anuththara Dayarathna) from the School of Life and Environmental Science. The project is about fabrication of adhesive silk hydrogel. The results provided preliminary data for an ARC Discovery project application (2027) which has been shortlisted for full application.
  • UG, HONOURS OR MASTERS DEGREE SUPERVISION
Supervision of Honors students (4) from School of Engineering
    1 Apr 2025 - 30 Apr 2027
Assisted by my PhD student Xin Li, I have supervised two Honors students (Leisel Parmansche and Yuhang Shi) from the School of Engineering (SoE). The projects are about Seawater Desalination by Interfacial Solar Evaporation and solar-assisted Catalytic Degradation of PET-containing Textile Waste. I am supervising another two Honors students (Haotian Xia and Qizhi Zhang) from SoE on a green and sustainable molecular gel with cottonseed oil as solvent. The gel has great potential for lubrication applications due to the high smoking temperature of cottonseed oil and the biocompatibility of both cottonseed oil and the gelator (amino acid derivative or fatty acid). This project is assisted by my PhD student Zhihong Zhang.
  • UG, HONOURS OR MASTERS DEGREE SUPERVISION
Supervision of a Masters student from School of Engineering
    20 Nov 2018 - 30 Oct 2019
I supervised a Masters student, Yeshwanth Mandalapu from SoE, on a summer placement (supported by IFM) and his SEL719 unit that required a research project.
