RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research focuses on developing renewable bio-based fibres, colours, and fibre-derived biomaterials that support the transition to a circular and sustainable materials economy. I am particularly interested in creating alternatives to fossil fuel-derived fibres using agricultural residues, end-of-life textile waste, and biotechnology-derived materials.
A major focus of my work is the scalable processing of natural and bioderived polymers including bacterial cellulose, silk and silk-like proteins. I investigate sustainable manufacturing approaches, including green chemistry, fibre spinning and advanced additive manufacturing, to develop high-value products with reduced environmental impact.
My research also explores the conversion of natural fibre wastes into micro- and nanofibres and particles using sustainable processing methods, and their application in advanced materials. Other areas of interest include recycled and bio-based colours, agro-based fibres such as banana and hemp, and bio-based composites including mycelium materials.
Beyond textiles, I use fibres and particles for biomedical devices, membranes, Pickering emulsions, and other advanced functional applications. More recently, I have been exploring the use of artificial intelligence to optimise fibre manufacturing processes and accelerate materials innovation. I am particularly interested in exploring next-generation fibre-based materials for sensing, healthcare, and other high-value emerging technologies through interdisciplinary research.
