RESEARCH INTERESTS
I’m working on a couple of exciting projects within my specialty of seaweed cultivation and restoration. The first is working with the University of Melbourne, Parks Victoria and The Nature Conservancy on a State-government funded project to restore Golden Kelp populations in Port Phillip Bay. At our Queenscliff Marine Science Centre, we are leading the kelp cultivation for the wider project, with juvenile kelp being grown on twine and gravel until ready for out planting in target areas (the first batch of babies were out planted in August 2023 and grew 5cm in six months – so our methods are working!). Concurrently, through funding from the Port Phillip Bay Fund, we are furthering our efforts to future-proof Golden Kelp populations in Port Phillip Bay through the establishment of a long-term seedbank and evaluating genetic connectivity between populations. This research allows us to investigate the best methods for Golden Kelp cultivation and restoration, with findings that can guide future, larger-scale efforts.
Another major project I am leading, is part of the 2023 Port Phillip Bay Funding round to deliver ocean literacy resource kits to 100 primary schools located around Port Phillip Bay to foster children’s connection with nature and inspire stewardship. This project is an extension of a case study led by DeakinSEA.Ed member, Dr Cátia Freitas where schools who utilised the kit, achieved learning outcomes linked to increased awareness and higher action knowledge pertaining to ocean stewardship.
