BIO

Dr Mathew Joosten is a Senior Lecturer within the School of Engineering at Deakin University, with a blend of experience spanning both industry and academia. He has an established track record in composite materials research, with joint publications and collaborative projects involving leading national and international organisations including the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), University of Miami, University of New South Wales (UNSW), and other academic and industry partners.

Mathew has significant experience in the design, analysis and characterisation of composite structures. He has contributed to engineering and research projects associated with several aircraft programs including the Airbus A300, A340, COMAC C919 and the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. This experience is leveraged to deliver engineering education with a strong real-world focus.

Since 2020, Mathew has led the Continuous Fibre Composites (CFC) Research Group at Deakin University. The group's research focuses on the development, manufacture, testing and analysis of advanced composite materials and structures, with particular emphasis on:

• Design and analysis methods for composite structures
• Continuous fibre additive manufacturing and 3D printed composites
• Structural integrity, fatigue and damage evolution in composite materials
• Advanced experimental characterisation, including synchrotron-based imaging and materials testing

The CFC Research Group works closely with academic, industry and government partners to develop practical engineering solutions and advance the understanding of composite material behaviour.

Dr Joosten is available to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects aligned with the areas listed above.
