BIO
Dr Olubukola Tokede is a Senior Lecturer and served as Associate Head of School (International) in the School of Architecture and Built Environment at Deakin University between August 2023 and July 2026. He is an internationally recognised expert in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainable built environments.
His research focuses on life-cycle performance modelling of buildings and infrastructure, with particular expertise in environmental impact assessment, sustainable materials, circular economy transitions, and the development of digital tools that support evidence-based sustainability decision-making. He publishes widely in leading international journals, and attracts considerable external research funding to drive the impact of his research. As a leader in the field, Dr Tokede has informed major international policy and industry frameworks, including Product Category Rules (PCR) for Construction Products and General Programme Instructions (GPI) that underpin Environmental Product Declarations.
Dr Tokede is a Life Cycle Assessment Certified Practitioner (LCACP), Treasurer and Director of the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society (ALCAS), Board Member of the International Life Cycle Academy, and Subject Editor (Buildings) for the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment. Through these leadership roles he contributes to advancing international standards, professional capability development, and disciplinary capacity building across the global LCA community. He is founder and leader of the Thinking Buildings research group and co-lead of the LCSA Tracker project, an internationally collaborative initiative that has developed innovative approaches for visualising and comparing life-cycle sustainability performance. His research collaborations span Australia, Germany, India, Sweden, South Africa, Oman and Vietnam.
As Associate Head of School (International), Dr Tokede led strategic internationalisation initiatives that have expanded transnational education partnerships, strengthened global mobility opportunities, and contributed to substantial growth in international student enrolments. He has initiated new partnerships across Asia and Africa and pioneered innovative international Work Integrated Learning opportunities, including the School’s first international WIL placement program with Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia).
An award-winning educator and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Dr Tokede has enhanced sustainability education through curriculum renewal across multiple programs and developed Australia’s first Life Cycle Assessment microcredential and associated open-access learning offerings. His teaching and curriculum leadership have strengthened industry engagement, employability outcomes, and sustainability capability development for students across disciplines.
Prior to joining Deakin University, Dr Tokede completed his PhD at Edinburgh Napier University (UK), where he also lectured in construction and Built Environment courses. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering and an MSc in Construction Project Management and previously worked across major infrastructure, construction and renewable energy projects in industry and with the United Nations Association in Scotland.
