RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr Mateti’s research interests include:
- Mechanochemistry and high-energy ball milling
- Solid-state hydrogen storage
- Mechanochemical gas adsorption, storage and separation
- Boron nitride nanosheets and nanotubes
- Scalable production of two-dimensional materials
- Graphene, hybrid nanosheets and functional nanomaterials
- Energy-storage materials and batteries
- Thermal-management materials
- Sustainable and solvent-free materials processing
- Nanomaterials for catalysis and advanced manufacturing
- Recovery and upcycling of materials from end-of-life solar panels
- Industry translation and scale-up of clean-energy technologies
A central theme of his research is the use of mechanical energy to create chemical activity and new material functions. His work explores how ball milling can generate reactive sites, strengthen gas–solid interactions, facilitate chemical reactions and simultaneously exfoliate, dope or functionalise materials.
This approach provides potentially cleaner, lower-waste and more scalable alternatives to conventional multi-step chemical processing. His research connects fundamental materials science with practical challenges in hydrogen technologies, carbon management, batteries, circular materials, thermal management and advanced manufacturing.
Current Research
Dr Mateti’s current research focuses on:
Australia Economic Accelerator (AEA Ignite) fund (AUD 499,034) to scale up 1kg Hydrogen module.
Solid-State Hydrogen Storage : Developing mechanochemically activated materials capable of storing hydrogen safely in solid form and releasing it under controlled conditions. This research includes the scale-up and validation of a one-kilogram hydrogen-storage module with external research and industry partners.
ARC DP (DP240101678), AUD 537038
Boron Nitride Materials : Creating new functions for boron nitride through defect engineering, mechanochemical activation, nanosheet production and composite manufacturing. Applications include hydrogen storage, gas separation, thermal management, catalysis, coatings and advanced structural materials. was funded from the ARC.
Gas Storage and Separation: Investigating selective interactions between gases and mechanically activated materials for hydrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and other industrially important gases. This work aims to establish solvent-free alternatives to conventional adsorption and gas-separation technologies.
Scalable Two-Dimensional Materials : Developing gas-assisted and mechanochemical methods for producing boron nitride, graphene and other two-dimensional nanosheets at larger scales with fewer chemical-processing steps.
Sustainable Energy Materials: Developing battery and energy materials using scalable and environmentally responsible processing, including the recovery of silicon from end-of-life solar panels for use in battery anodes.
