DrWayne Read

Wayne Read is a Senior Lecturer in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and Deputy Director of the Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin Business School, with over a decade of experience in teaching, curriculum innovation, and employability-focused education.

Since commencing his academic career in 2011, Wayne has taught across large undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts, building a reputation for engaging, high-impact teaching and strong student connection. His early work included piloting innovative delivery models such as the flipped classroom, contributing to a faculty teaching award for first-year marketing in 2013. Across his teaching, Wayne consistently focuses on bridging theory and practice—ensuring students can translate academic learning into meaningful career outcomes.

Wayne is a recognised leader in the design and delivery of scalable, high-quality WIL. He served as Academic Coordinator of WIL for Deakin Business School from 2017 to 2025, and continued in an acting capacity through to April 2026. In this role, he led the redevelopment of the School’s WIL suite and the creation of innovative, industry-engaged programs that provide authentic learning at scale. He was also part of the original team that developed MWL101 Professional Insight, a cornerstone first-year career development unit.

Beyond Deakin, Wayne contributes actively to the national WIL community. He is Chair of the Victoria and Tasmania Chapter of WIL Australia (formerly ACEN), a role he has held for several years, and has served on the organising committees for the 2022, 2024 and 2026 WIL Australia Conferences, including as Deputy Chair. Wayne regularly presents on topics such as scalable WIL, online WIL, quality supervision, and building respectful partnerships with Indigenous organisations. He also provides guidance and guest presentations to faculties across Deakin and WIL teams at other universities.

Wayne’s thought leadership extends through his ThoughtBubbles blog series with DeakinTalent, where he explores contemporary issues in employability and WIL, including inclusive and equitable practice, assessment and reflection, and accessible models of WIL for diverse student cohorts.

His contributions to teaching and curriculum innovation have been recognised through multiple awards, including Deakin Vice-Chancellor’s Awards (2022, 2023) and a 2025 AAUT Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

Wayne’s research interests include Work Integrated Learning, graduate employability, and consumer engagement, with publications in journals such as the European Journal of Marketing and the Australasian Marketing Journal. He has also secured competitive funding to develop national resources on online WIL and to support respectful, reciprocal partnerships with Indigenous stakeholders.
