BIO

Dr Xin Hu is a Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Built Environment, Deakin University. He holds a PhD in Construction and Project Management from Queensland University of Technology. Before joining Deakin University, he worked as a Research Associate and Research Fellow in the School of Design and the Built Environment, Curtin University.

Dr Xin Hu brings an interdisciplinary research approach to promoting sustainable built environments. By integrating scholarly expertise in sustainability, ageing, the built environment, and construction project management, he has developed a strong research track record in sustainable living environments for older people and in sustainability management within the construction industry. He has published 51 peer-reviewed journal papers, 10 conference papers, one edited e-book, one book chapter, and one media article. Many of his papers have appeared in Q1 journals, and one of his conference papers received a Best Paper Award in 2018. A 2020 bibliometric study identified him as one of the most active researchers in the field of “retirement villages”. As of 17 July 2026, his work has attracted 1,790 citations, with an h-index of 24 and an i10-index of 36 (Google Scholar). Since joining Deakin University, he has secured six internal research grants supporting his research program. He has supervised two PhD candidates to completion as an associate supervisor and co-supervisor in 2024 and 2025, respectively. He has also developed wider research collaborations with researchers both inside and outside the construction management discipline.

Dr Xin Hu has extensive teaching experience in the core areas of construction management. His teaching philosophy is rooted in student-centred learning pedagogy, which emphasises the central role of students in teaching and learning activities. He also actively contributes to the development of construction management courses through positive roles in learning design, teaching team management, mentoring, and course accreditation. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he maintains an ongoing commitment to teaching excellence.

Dr Xin Hu is currently the School's Health and Safety Representative, a role in which he contributes to the development of a healthy and safe working environment. He also contributes to the broader construction management research community as a reviewer for leading journals and international conferences, and as an editorial board member of two international journals: Buildings (Q1) and Discover Cities.
