RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr Xin Hu’s research focuses on sustainable built environments and comprises two themes: sustainable living environments for older people and sustainability management within the construction industry.
1. Sustainable living environments for older people
Dr Xin Hu’s research in this theme addresses the development of sustainable living environments for older people (e.g., in retirement villages), comprising three components: financial affordability, environmental sustainability, and age-friendly social environments. He integrates theories and practices from diverse disciplines, including sustainable development, environmental gerontology, and the built environment. Topics explored in this theme include sustainability frameworks and practices in the housing sector for older people. For example, his 2020 paper published in the Journal of Cleaner Production (Q1) developed a sustainable retirement village framework for the Australian context. His research in this theme advances understanding and practice at the intersection of ageing, sustainability, and the living environment.
2. Sustainability management within the construction industry
Dr Xin Hu’s research in this theme addresses the improvement of sustainability performance within the construction industry, primarily from environmental and social perspectives. He integrates theories and practices from the disciplines of construction management, the built environment, and sustainable development. Topics explored in this theme include stakeholders’ sustainability perceptions and behaviours, off-site manufacturing, and safety. His research in this theme promotes the sustainable development of the construction sector to achieve green and socially responsible production.
