TEACHING EXPERTISE
I love teaching! I teach across the Master of Speech Pathology with a particular interest in student professional practice and competency development. I use social and situated learning methods that emphasis peer and academic collaboration, context based learning and authentic experiences. This includes an emphasis on realistic case-based, simulation, and hands-on skill development experiences. All learning is active and engaging. Across the course, we actively engage with Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of learning, including drawing on stories and narratives, explicitly mapping learning and engaging with the local community.
I have supervised over 30 students in through minor research theses as part of Masters by Coursework degrees; three years in a row my supervisee was awarded the highest mark for the cohort for their research thesis. These research projects have been broad and have included both qualitative and quantative research, exploring topics including parent views about accessing help and about speech pathology intervention for children's communication needs, pathways that people take in seeking help for communication needs, supporting adults with communication support needs to be safe from abuse, predictors of communication outcomes in children with hearing loss, community views about preventative care, participation, and wellbeing in ageing; children's communication participation after intensive speech pathology intervention; and clinical learning environments and experiences for students when on practice education placement.
I have also supervised a Masters by Research student to completion, and have examined honours, masters and PhD theses, as well as sitting on PhD advisory committees.
One of my passions is linking teaching to research and back again- that is, I like to explore questions like how do students best learn, and how can we foster learning so that students are able to work as excellent speech pathologists when they graduate? I am also interested in collaborative projects that work with people with a disability, parents and communities. However, I am open to discussing supervision for projects that look at any area of speech pathology practice, including multidisciplinary practice.
