DrAlessandro Zambelli

Alex's research draws on architecture, archaeology, and anthropology, with a particular emphasis on the legal, historical, and affective dimensions of commons in the UK and Australia. He was a Co-Investigator on the AHRC-funded project Wastes and Strays: The Past, Present and Future of English Urban Commons, which culminated in the book English Urban Commons (Routledge, 2024). His earlier monograph, Scandalous Space: Between Architecture and Archaeology (AADR, 2019), developed from his Bartlett PhD, examines architectural–archaeological interdisciplinarities through drawing and material culture. His recent work extends commons scholarship to the Australian context, including the co-authored chapter "Unbeating the Bounds of Australia's Colonial Commons" in Repair Stories (Perimeter Editions, 2026) and a submission to the ARC Future Fellowship scheme on Australia's colonial commons. He co-led the AHRA Annual International Conference 2023, from which he is co-editing Situated Ecologies of Care (Routledge, in press) and co-guest editing a special issue of Architecture and Culture, and is contributing a chapter to the forthcoming Routledge Companion to Spatial Practice and the Urban Commons.
