BIO
Dean Golja is an Australian artist, photographer and educator whose practice spans photography, moving image and installation. His work investigates the limits of seeing and the changing nature of the photographic image, asking how images might disclose what cannot be directly observed.
His artistic practice has been exhibited in Australia, China, the UAE and Croatia, including Emerge and Before & After at the Pingyao International Photography Festival, The Abiding Spirit at Zayed University and Inland at the Italian Culture Institute in Abu Dhabi. Correspondence was presented in Zagreb. His essays Persistent Vision, Image as Spirit and Entangled Light are published in FRAMES.
Alongside his art practice, Golja brings extensive industry experience as a professional photographer and image-maker, especially for not-for-profit clients and agencies. That experience grounds his teaching and research in the realities of commissioned work, production and the working life of images outside the gallery.
He is currently completing a practice-led PhD at Deakin University, BEHOLD: The Abiding Spirit in Photography, which asks: What lies beyond the visible, and how may photography begin to see it?
