RESEARCH INTERESTS

Golja is currently an artist in residence at the Deakin Motion Lab, where he is developing correspondence and the moving-image and installation work leading to his final doctoral exhibition, Behold. His research interests include:

•          The limits of direct seeing. Absence, latency, trace and indirect evidence as legitimate objects of photographic enquiry.

• L.I.V.E. (Light, Image, Vision and Experience). A practice-led methodology through which the photograph is understood as an event occurring between physical phenomena, image, observer and experience.

•          The relational image. Quantum ghost imaging and the correlated image, in which an image may be a relationship rather than a depiction of one.

•          Correspondence as a method. Placing metaphysical thought, such as Swedenborg’s correspondences, besides experimental imaging without claiming that one validates the other.

•          Spirit Photography and the Unseen. Recovering the question early, photographers were attempting to answer and the persistent desire to make the absent present.

•          The post-optical image. Computational reconstruction, fMRI imaging and machine vision and what becomes of photography when seeing is no longer necessary to produce an image.

• From proof to presence. The exhibition as a site where photographic knowledge is produced through scale, duration, darkness, projection and the viewer’s encounter.
