RESEARCH INTERESTS

1. Food Security and Nutrition Inequities

My work focuses on understanding and addressing disparities in food access, affordability, and nutrition quality, particularly for households and communities that are disproportionally impacted by food insecurity.

Topics I research include:

  • People's experiences in, and preferences for, non-profit/social enterprise food programs
  • Systemic drivers and consequences of food insecurity in Australia
  • Food insecurity in priority populations including families, early childhood and pregnancy

2. Community Food Systems

As a former staff member at SecondBite and Director of The Community Grocer, I have a track-record of integrating practical, community‑led models with academic research. Topics I reasearch include:

  • Building capacity and evidence into community food systems
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of community‑driven models in improving food access/nutrition/social inclusion/sustainability
  • Identifying regulatory or financial barriers and opportunities for not‑for‑profit food organisations and partners

3. Policy for Equitable and Sustainable Food Systems

This research theme investigates how local, national, and global policies influence access to nutritious, affordable, and culturally appropriate food—and how policy & actions of governments can be leveraged to reduce inequities and strengthen community resilience. Topics I research include:

  • Co‑designing policy recommendations with interest holders, including communities experiencing food insecurity
  • The role of social protection policy in supporting household food and nutrition security
  • Leverage points in different portfolios (e.g. health, welfare, education, community development, families, agriculture) for advancing household food security and food as a human right
