RESEARCH INTERESTS

Research in the Stambas laboratory is primarily focused on understanding
immune responses following virus infection and vaccination. The main
scientific aim is to carefully dissect immune responses following virus
infection and vaccination to determine relevant immune correlates of
protection in order to drive innovative strategies for future vaccine or
therapeutic development. Prof. Stambas has made a significant contribution to
his field as evidenced by his publication history and his invitations to
organise and present at local, national and international conferences.

Knowledge Areas
immunology, virology, adaptive and innate immunity, influenza virus and T
cells

Projects
Seasonal influenza virus infection is responsible for approximately 500,000
deaths worldwide annually and has significant socioeconomic impacts. Although
intervention strategies are in place to combat infection ie vaccines and
antivirals, efficacy varies, especially in susceptible populations. There have
been concerted efforts in recent years to develop a universal influenza
vaccine and/or to uncover alternative intervention strategies to improve
disease outcomes. Our lab in focused on host-pathogen interactions and
immunity following infection. Projects have been designed to study and assess
the contribution of host proteins on influenza virus pathogenesis and to
uncover novel pathways that can be targeted for therapeutic purposes.
