RESEARCH INTERESTS
Exposure to an unfavourable environment during in utero and early postnatal development is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood. My research examines why maternal obesity or high fat diet consumption can predispose the offspring to develop hypertension by studying the role of the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic neural inputs controlling this sympathetic drive.
I am also interested in understanding the interplay between ocular pressure and systemic blood pressure in the development and progression of glaucoma; one of the leading causes of blindness in Australia. I collaborate with vision scientists and biological engineers to develop novel techniques to non-invasively measure autoregulation in retinal blood vessels.
In addition to the basic scientific studies, I am actively involved in a number of clinical trials seeking to improve outcomes for patients with ocular disease and dysfunction.
Training outstanding optometry clinicians is another research focus of mine, and this work has been recognised with two Vice Chancellor's awards for excellence in teaching and an Australian Award for University Teaching Citation
