RESEARCH INTERESTS
Associate Professor Michael Johnstone’s research focuses on modelling, simulation and digital twins for operational decision-making in complex human-machine and organisational systems. His work integrates discrete-event simulation, agent-based modelling, optimisation, artificial intelligence and systems modelling to support robust, defensible decisions under uncertainty.
His research is applied in settings where live trial and error is costly, risky or impractical, including electoral administration, advanced manufacturing, transport safety, health systems and defence simulation. A central theme of his work is translating validated modelling methods into decision-support systems that organisations can use for planning, scheduling, forecasting and operational coordination.
